This is a great activity for Michigan family vacations for all ages. From kids to grandparents, everyone really seems to enjoy the great scenery, lively narration, and getting out on the water. When you read about these boat tours, it's amazing how completely different each one is.
The Star of Saugatuck II entered service after receiving Coastguard certification in June of 2000. This new, larger, double-decker improved version replaced the original
Star of Saugatuck which was moved to Waco, Texas. As you can see below, it's a nostalgic, double-decker paddlewheeler that cruises the Kalamazoo River out of Saugatuck.
The Friends Good Will in South Haven is another wonderful Lake Michigan boat tour giving passengers an opportunity to sail on a replica of a famous 1800s sloop. Anyone who'd like to participate is welcome to do so and makes the experience even more authentic. The boat tours are offered in the afternoon and sunset evening cruises are offered as well. The Friends Good Will is docked at the Michigan Maritime Museum in downtown South Haven.
The Saugatuck Chain Ferry is truly an historic boat tour you'll not find anywhere else. Yes, it's short. But, it's unique and an enjoyable piece of history. This is a one-of-a-kind human-powered ferry that is hand-cranked. It's based in downtown Saugatuck and travels across the Kalamazoo River to Mt. Baldhead Park (another spot not to miss!). Read more about it!
The Duck boat rides in the Saugatuck and Douglas - actually called The Harbor Duck is a transformed World War II Army amphibious vessel about 30 feet long - half tour bus and half boat.
It's a really cool touring machine that tours the towns of Saugatuck and Douglas and then plunges into the water and tours the Saugatuck Harbor and the Kalamazoo River. The latest ticket prices on the Harbor Duck were $17 for adults and about $9 for kids. Buy tickets at the Duck Stop on Culver Street in Saugatuck across from Coughlin Park. If you'd like to give them a call: (269) 857-DUCK.
